Our take
Most "lost" files are still on the disk until something writes over them, and that is the whole trick: stop using the drive, run a scan, see the preview. If the preview shows your files, the licence is a fraction of a recovery-lab quote. If it does not, you have lost twenty minutes, not a deposit.
The honest downside
Windows only, and no software recovers from a drive that is physically failing or a phone. Photo, email, and duplicate-finder are separate purchases, so buy the one that matches the emergency. For a business-critical drive, image it first and recover from the copy.
